South Shore Joint Initiative needs your help to get Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area and Ostrander Point Crown Land Block designated as Conservation Reserves

Over the past two months, the South Shore Joint Initiative has asked you to write to Minister of Environment Conservation and Parks Jeff Yurek.  Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to send a letter.

We are sending this appeal again because we know that more letters mean more support.  More support helps the Minister to understand how important this issue is to all of us concerned about protection of the last piece of undeveloped shoreline on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario.

Both Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area and Ostrander Point Crown Land Block demonstrate remarkable biodiversity.  Both of these pieces of public land are available for recreational use by Prince Edward County citizens and present an eco-tourism opportunity going forward. Designation of these public lands as Conservation Reserves will ensure their protection and allow for traditional activities to continue.

Below are some ideas to help you write your own email letter to the Minister.  Please choose one to email to Minister of the Environment Conservation and Parks Hon. Jeff Yurek [email protected]

Please copy the message to Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Hon. John Yakabuski [email protected] , to Hon. Todd Smith MPP Bay of Quinte [email protected] and to [email protected]

Suggestion 1

I strongly support the proposal by South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) for Conservation Reserve designation for Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area on the South Shore of Prince Edward County.

The biodiversity on Prince Edward County’s South Shore is remarkable and must be protected from development.  Maintenance of natural habitat is an important component of climate change amelioration.  I urge you to start now to protect this vital last piece of undeveloped shoreline on Lake Ontario’s north shore.

I ask that you work with your colleagues in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to designate Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area as Ontario Conservation Reserves.

Suggestion 2

I strongly support the proposal by South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) for Conservation Reserve designation for Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area on the South Shore of Prince Edward County.

These lands have been available for human recreation for about the last seventy years.  Hunters, fishers, birders, hikers, snowmobilers and ATV riders enjoy the use of trails, wetlands and shoreline.  Biological diversity thrives with this.  Please start now to protect these lands for the future use and enjoyment of all.

I ask that you work with your colleagues in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to designate Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area as Ontario Conservation Reserves.

Suggestion 3

I strongly support the proposal by South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) for Conservation Reserve designation for Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area on the South Shore of Prince Edward County.

Eco-tourism is a growing area of economic development in Prince Edward County.  These crown lands on the South Shore offer potential for outdoor education and enjoyment for visitors to the County.  Research shows that outdoor activities form the basis for increased physical, mental and emotional health.  Protecting these two areas will add not only to the economic health of the County but also offers a potential benefit to all Ontarians.

I ask that you work with your colleagues in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to designate Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area as Ontario Conservation Reserves.

Suggestion 4

I strongly support the proposal by South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) for Conservation Reserve designation for Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area on the South Shore of Prince Edward County.

I have spent many hours in the public lands of the South Shore.  I am amazed at the many different plants animals and birds that I see using the area.  It is a magical place where anyone can go to appreciate nature and enjoy the outdoors. Please save it for me and my grandchildren and for the environment.

I ask that you work with your colleagues in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to designate Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area as Ontario Conservation Reserves.
